It seems that back in 1837 then President Van Buren sent a work party to develop a capitol for the pre-statehood Wisconsin. After wading thru the rain for days and days they reached a prairie just as the sun peeked out. One of the more diligent members of the gang decided to carve “Sun Prairie” into a tree, which apparently was a customary expression of excitement in
those days. Then a few years later, Charlie Bird, who was one of Van Buren’s original crew ventured back to the vicinity and became a settler. And from that humble beginning the city of Sun Prairie eventually emerged.

These days, Sun Prairie is a successful Wisconsin city with all the services you would anticipate of a small metropolitan area.
